Carry-On Toiletry Bag: What Goes In, What Stays Home

A quart bag realistically holds six to nine 3 oz bottles. Start from the things you cannot buy at the destination, move everything you can to solid form, and leave the rest.

How much actually fits in a quart bag?

Six to nine containers at 3 oz, depending on shape. Flat-sided bottles pack tighter than round ones, and a rigid tube of toothpaste wastes the corner it sits in.

The bag has to close. An officer who cannot zip it will make you remove items at the belt, which is slower than deciding at home.

What earns a place in the bag?

Prescription and medical items first, then anything specific to you that a drugstore at the destination will not carry — a particular contact solution, a prescription cream, a skin product you react badly without.

Everything generic is a candidate for cutting. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash exist everywhere, and hotels supply two of the three.

What should move to solid form?

Shampoo bars, conditioner bars, stick deodorant, powdered detergent, and solid perfume are not liquids and do not touch the quart bag. Moving three items to solid form usually frees enough room for the ones that cannot move.

Toothpaste tablets do the same job for the tube. They are the single easiest swap because a tube is bulky for the amount of product it holds.

What belongs in checked luggage instead?

Full-size anything, aerosols above the limit, and nail scissors or razors with exposed blades. If the trip has a checked bag, that is where the bulk goes.

Carry-on only means the decision is already made: if it will not fit the quart bag and cannot go solid, it does not come.

What is the fastest way through the checkpoint?

Quart bag on top, reachable without unpacking. Electronics in their own layer. Nothing loose in an outside pocket that has to be emptied at the belt.

Repack the bag the same way every trip. The speed comes from not having to think about where anything is while a line forms behind you.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a TSA quart bag?
Roughly 7 by 8 inches, the size of a standard quart zip-top bag. Purpose-made clear pouches are fine as long as they are transparent and about that size.
Can you bring a razor in a carry-on?
Disposable and cartridge razors are allowed in carry-ons. Safety razors are allowed only with the blade removed, and straight razors are not.
Do hotel toiletries count against the limit?
Only on the way home, if you take them. Most hotel bottles are under 3.4 oz and fit the quart bag, but they still take up its space.
Can two people share one quart bag?
No. Each passenger is allowed one bag, and families cannot pool into a single larger one.
Does the toiletry bag itself have to be clear?
The liquids bag does. The larger toiletry kit holding your solid items, brush, and razor does not.
What is the most commonly forgotten carry-on item?
Contact solution. It is a liquid, it is specific to the wearer, and it is the one thing on the list that a late arrival cannot easily solve.
