How to Pack Makeup Brushes So They Survive the Trip

Bristles bend permanently when a brush is pressed sideways in a packed bag. Anything that keeps them upright and enclosed prevents nearly all travel damage.

What actually damages a brush in a bag?

Side pressure. A brush lying flat under weight has its bristles pushed sideways, and natural and synthetic fibres both take a set if they are held bent for a day.

The second problem is contamination. Loose brushes pick up powder, spilled product, and whatever else is in the bag, and a contaminated brush transfers all of it to your face.

Does wrapping them in tissue work?

Barely. Tissue stops surface contact but does nothing about pressure, which is the damage that lasts. It also has to be redone every time.

A rigid or semi-rigid holder is the actual fix, because it takes the load off the bristles instead of padding it.

How should brushes be stored while travelling?

Upright, bristles up, in something that holds its shape. That is the same way they are stored at home, and for the same reason.

Do not pack them damp. A brush washed the night before travel and sealed away wet grows exactly what you would expect, and there is no fixing it afterwards.

What about washing them on a trip?

Wash at the start of the trip, not the end, so they dry in a room rather than in a bag. A brush needs hours of open air to dry through the ferrule.

If they must be washed late, dry them bristles-down over the edge of a surface so water runs away from the glue rather than into it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you pack makeup brushes for travel?
Upright, bristles up, in something rigid enough to keep pressure off them. Side pressure is what bends bristles permanently.
Can you wrap brushes in tissue instead?
It stops surface contact but not pressure, which is the damage that lasts. It also has to be redone every repack.
Should you wash brushes before a trip?
Yes, but early enough to dry fully. A brush sealed away damp loosens at the ferrule and starts shedding.
Do makeup brushes need to be in the liquids bag?
No. Brushes are not liquids. The products you use them with may be.
How do you dry a brush without damaging it?
Bristles-down over the edge of a surface, so water runs away from the glue in the ferrule rather than into it.
