Staying Cool on a Hot Flight When the Vent Isn't Enough

The overhead vents often run weak or not at all while the plane is on the ground, which is exactly when the cabin is hottest. Anything that moves air near your own face is worth more than anything that cools the cabin.

Why is a plane hottest before it takes off?

Because on the ground the cabin is often cooled by a ground unit or the auxiliary power unit rather than the engines, and that setup moves far less air than cruise does. Add a full cabin of people and a closed door and the temperature climbs fast.

It reverses at altitude. The same flight that was unbearable at the gate is cold enough for a blanket an hour later, which is why dressing in layers beats dressing for either extreme.

What actually helps in the seat?

Moving air across skin, not lowering the cabin temperature. A small amount of airflow at your own face changes how hot you feel far more than the same effort spent on the room.

Cold water on the wrists and the back of the neck works for the same reason. Both are places where blood runs close to the surface.

What should you wear?

Layers you can remove without standing up. A cabin swings from hot at the gate to cold at cruise, and the only clothing that handles both is clothing you can change while seated.

Avoid anything that traps humidity against the skin. Cabin air is extremely dry at altitude, which helps sweat evaporate, but only if the fabric lets it.

Is a personal fan allowed on board?

Small battery-powered fans are generally fine, and lithium batteries belong in the cabin rather than the hold. Check your airline's rules for anything with a large battery.

Look for a clip rather than a stand. A tray table is not a stable base, and a clip gives you options — seatback pocket, stroller, gym bag, back of a chair.

Frequently asked questions

Why are planes so hot before takeoff?
On the ground the cabin is cooled by a ground unit or the APU, which moves much less air than the engines do at cruise. A full cabin makes it worse.
Can you bring a portable fan on a plane?
Small battery-powered fans are generally permitted. Keep lithium batteries in the cabin rather than in checked luggage, and check your airline's rules for larger batteries.
Does the overhead vent actually help?
At cruise, yes. On the ground it is often weak or off, which is when the cabin is hottest.
What should you wear on a flight that gets hot then cold?
Layers you can add or remove while seated. Cabins swing from hot at the gate to cold at altitude on the same flight.
Does drinking cold water help you cool down?
Some. Cold water on the wrists and the back of the neck works faster, because blood runs close to the surface in both places.
