How to Pack Jewelry So Nothing Tangles or Goes Missing

A chain tangles when it has room to coil, and it stops tangling the moment it cannot move. Separate compartments, or a chain threaded through something before it is packed, solve almost all of it.

Why do necklaces tangle in a bag?

Because vibration lets a loose chain coil, and a coiled chain catches its own clasp. It is not the packing that does it, it is the four hours of movement afterwards.

Two chains in the same space tangle with each other in the same way and take twice as long to separate.

What actually stops it?

Removing the slack. A chain that cannot move cannot coil, so anything that holds it flat and taut is enough.

The travel trick that costs nothing is threading the chain through a drinking straw and clasping it. It is ugly and it works completely.

How do you stop losing earrings?

Keep pairs together and enclosed. A single earring loose in a bag is gone, and the pair is worthless without it.

Studs pushed through a small piece of fabric or foam stay paired and stay put. That is the entire function of the padded panel in a jewelry case.

What should not go in checked luggage?

Anything you would be upset to lose. Checked bags go missing, and most travel insurance excludes or heavily limits jewelry in checked luggage.

Keep it in the cabin, in your personal item rather than the overhead bin, so it stays with you if the bin fills and your bag gets gate-checked.

Frequently asked questions

How do you keep necklaces from tangling when travelling?
Remove the slack. A chain that cannot move cannot coil. Separate compartments, or threading the chain through a drinking straw and clasping it.
Can you take jewelry through airport security?
Yes. Most jewelry does not need to be removed, though large metal pieces may trigger secondary screening.
Should jewelry go in checked luggage?
No. Checked bags go missing and most travel policies limit or exclude jewelry in them. Keep it in your personal item.
How do you stop losing earrings while travelling?
Keep pairs together and enclosed. Studs pushed through fabric or foam stay paired; loose in a bag, one always goes.
What is the best way to pack rings?
In a closed compartment, not on a soft surface they can roll off. A ring in an open pouch ends up in the lining.
